Pedro Duque, former Spanish Minister of Science and Innovation, visited SCALE Nanotech in Valencia this week in connection with the company’s activity at the Nanophotonics Technology Center (NTC) of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), where he learned firsthand about the company’s work in photonic technologies, semiconductors, and micro-/nanofabrication.
The visit, organized by SCALE Nanotech, highlights the company’s role in talent repatriation and in advancing deep-tech development with a European foundation. SCALE Nanotech develops and protects intellectual property in industrial processes using advanced materials, such as graphene, as well as optoelectronic devices for commercialization in disruptive products.
SCALE Nanotech is establishing its laboratory in the NTC Institute building as part of the MEGAMORPH project under ATTRACT Phase 2, which has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Framework Programme. The project is focused on developing new graphene-based display architectures for advanced applications, including Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR).

During the visit, the former minister was able to see both the advanced manufacturing and characterization environment available at the NTC and the way SCALE Nanotech is leveraging it to accelerate high-impact technological development. The visit included the NTC Institute’s cleanroom, recognized as a Unique Scientific and Technical Infrastructure (ICTS) by the Ministry of Science and Innovation. The facility is currently undergoing expansion and features equipment unique in Europe for the fabrication of semiconductor-based photonic devices.
It is worth noting that both the Government of Spain and the European Commission have identified semiconductor technology as key to ensuring development, competitiveness, and technological sovereignty. Accordingly, they have launched initiatives such as the PERTE for microelectronics and semiconductors and the IPCEI on microelectronics, respectively, to strengthen and secure the semiconductor value chain in both Spain and Europe. In this context of public-private collaboration, SCALE Nanotech is helping drive the Valencian ecosystem forward as a deep-tech leader capable of transforming advanced research into intellectual property, industrial collaboration, and high-value-added economic activity.
